Framing Support for Local Artists

Framing for the People!

As most artists find out, framing can be challenging. Deciding what works best for their work and affording it can be overwhelming.

We are cheerleaders for all artists and want to help them in any way that we're able. The main thing we can do is talk through their needs and desires, and give advice. We've rarely talked to an artist where cost was not an issue, because it gets tacked onto the price they charge for their art.

One thing to consider is if the buyer may want to frame it themselves, after they purchase it. In this case, a temporary situation, where the art is displayed very simply and removable from the frame is what you want. Quality mass-produced frames can be reused over and over, with new custom mats cut by us. Factory made frames are designed to be easy to fit yourself. We can recommend frames for you to purchase, if this is the route you want to take.

There are many to avoid because they are made with PVC or plastics and/or have flimsy plastic “glazing”. These cheap frames look unprofessional and are not as reusable (they end up in a landfill much sooner). We have a nice basic line that we can order for you, and only charge our cost. This way we can support you by passing on our wholesale pricing to you.

Some clever artists find used frames at second hand shops, then have custom mats, backing and glass made to order. We love this option since it involves re-use and you may find some interesting frames for a steal!

Another option, which is great for small pieces, is our “custom ready-mades” selection. When we have extra moulding footage from custom framing, we make it into 8x10 and 11x14 sized frames. These frames are a way to get interesting, normally expensive moulding for a great price.

We leave them empty, but the price includes, Conservation Clear glass, acid free backing, paper dust cover, wire, and labor. If a mat is needed, there is an extra charge. We have an ever-changing selection and rarely have two of the same frame.

8x10s are around $65. and 11x14s are around $110. Depending on the frame (plus $30 for an acid-free mat, if needed). If you want reflection control UV glass, there is another up-charge.

We think my best advice is to consider framing as soon as possible. If you have a show that you are working on, come in and discuss framing with me as soon as you can. We may be able to save you some stress by knowing what your expenses will be, and keeping you on schedule.

I know that art comes in many mediums and there are different ways of treating each one. For example: Oils, acrylics and encaustics don’t need glass or mats. We always frame art so that it is not altered in any way. This will make it easier for you to remove the art if needed.
