What Is Art?

What Is Art?

The dictionary definition:

Art is the class of objects that meet or are subject to aesthetic criteria; objects considered beautiful, imaginative, skillful, and meaningful collectively, such as paintings, sculptures, or drawings:

The reason I picked this topic is to broaden your ideas of what is worth hanging on your walls. These are thoughts I have from the diverse styles, mediums and subjects that I have framed for people.

#1 If you love it, that’s all that matters! Your domestic partner may have different ideas, but I think it’s a great example of what it means to be in a relationship: respect for your differences, an interest in their interests, and finding what you BOTH love.

#2 If it has a story, you will love it forever. Posters from concerts, festivals and museum exhibitions have nice imagery and graphics to remind you of the event. The pieces that clients buy on their travels are some of my favorites. Remember the day you came upon a street artist in Mexico City and fell in love with their colors and symbols so you just had to have it? You rolled it up and carried it all the way home, brought it to Queen Anne Frame the next week and told me all about your trip (and now I must go too!) When it’s on your wall, the good vibes of your journey live on forever and spark conversations with your guests who see it.

#3 There is no amateur art. It doesn’t need a pedigree to be valuable to YOU. Thrift store finds, where the original story isn’t known, can be a part of your new story. Someone in the 70s painted a still life oil painting and a few decades later it ended up at the thrift store where you found it and loved it. Or, you found out that Grandma liked to sketch portraits and you found them in a box of her things. Or, that magazine ad is so cool and will be awesome in your bathroom. Or, your kindergartner created a collage that blows your mind.

#4 Anything can be art. We stretched a huge coffee bean burlap bag as if it were a canvas painting. We shadowboxed a pair of Grandpa’s old socks (he had unusually large feet!) worthy of a museum exhibit. We framed an Indonesian fabric stencil, coated in the many colors of ink from years of use.

So, it could be beautiful, imaginative, skillful or meaningful to you. I am amazed by the creative ideas our clients have. Please keep the fun projects coming!
